How much?!! The most expensive rock albums ever

Creating an album, particularly in the rock and heavy metal genres, can be an expensive endeavor. Some albums have become legendary not just for their music but for the enormous costs associated with their production. Here’s a look at ten rock and heavy metal albums that are among the most expensive ever made:

1. Guns N’ Roses - *Chinese Democracy* (2008)

   - **Estimated Cost:** $13 million

   - **Details:** This album holds the record for the most expensive rock album ever produced. The production spanned over a decade, with a revolving door of producers, engineers, and musicians. The extensive use of studio time, re-recording, and perfectionism of frontman Axl Rose contributed to the staggering cost.

 2. Def Leppard - *Hysteria* (1987)

   - **Estimated Cost:** $5 million

   - **Details:** "Hysteria" was another extremely costly album, partially due to the extensive time it took to produce. The band’s original producer, Jim Steinman, was replaced by Mutt Lange, who spent years with the band refining their sound. Additionally, the album's production was delayed when drummer Rick Allen lost his arm in a car accident and had to relearn to play with a custom drum kit.

3. Metallica - *Metallica (The Black Album)* (1991)

   - **Estimated Cost:** $1 million

   - **Details:** Although $1 million might seem modest compared to other entries on this list, for its time, "The Black Album" was one of the most expensive ever produced. The band and producer Bob Rock spent an extended period in the studio to achieve the album's pristine sound. The meticulous attention to detail contributed to its hefty price tag.

4. Fleetwood Mac - *Tusk* (1979)

   - **Estimated Cost:** $1 million (equivalent to about $3.6 million today)

   - **Details:** After the massive success of "Rumours," Fleetwood Mac had virtually unlimited resources for their follow-up. Lindsey Buckingham spearheaded the creation of a double album that pushed the boundaries of rock production at the time. The band utilized the latest studio technology and took a year to complete the album.

5. Boston - *Third Stage* (1986)

   - **Estimated Cost:** $1 million+

   - **Details:** Boston's third album took six years to produce, largely because band leader Tom Scholz was a perfectionist who insisted on doing much of the work himself. The album was recorded in his home studio, where he meticulously crafted each sound, contributing to both the time and cost.

AC/DC - *For Those About to Rock We Salute You* (1981)

   - **Estimated Cost:** $1 million

   - **Details:** AC/DC's follow-up to their massively successful "Back in Black" was recorded with the same producer, Mutt Lange. The band and Lange sought to match the success of its predecessor, leading to extensive studio time and meticulous production, significantly raising the album’s cost.

7. Queen - *A Night at the Opera* (1975)

   - **Estimated Cost:** $500,000 (equivalent to about $2.7 million today)

   - **Details:** For its time, "A Night at the Opera" was one of the most expensive albums ever made. Queen used cutting-edge technology and multi-track recording techniques to create the album’s complex soundscapes. The legendary track "Bohemian Rhapsody" alone was a costly endeavor due to its intricate production.

8. Steely Dan - *Gaucho* (1980)

   - **Estimated Cost:** $1 million+

   - **Details:** Steely Dan was known for their perfectionism in the studio, and "Gaucho" took this to the extreme. The album’s production was plagued by technical problems, legal issues, and the band’s insistence on achieving a flawless sound, which ballooned the cost.

9. Aerosmith - *Get a Grip* (1993)

   - **Estimated Cost:** $2 million

   - **Details:** By the early 1990s, Aerosmith was back in full swing and spared no expense in creating "Get a Grip." The band worked with top-tier producers and spent an extensive amount of time in the studio, using state-of-the-art technology to perfect their sound.

 10. U2 - *Pop* (1997)

   - **Estimated Cost:** $4 million

   - **Details:** "Pop" was one of U2’s most ambitious and expensive projects. The band experimented with electronic dance music, incorporating a wide array of new sounds and technologies. The album’s high production cost was due in part to the band’s desire to push the boundaries of rock music at the time.

These albums illustrate that the road to creating a legendary record is often paved with significant financial investment. High costs, however, do not always guarantee commercial success, but they do often reflect a band’s ambition and commitment to pushing the limits of their creativity.

Valkyrie’s Fire new album out November

Valkyrie’s Fire are a symphonic power metal band from Nashville, Tennessee, born of true emotional passion that ignites our hearts and unlocks the deepest mysteries of the soul. The band just premiered a new music video titled "Warrior of the Night" which is the first single & music video taken from their upcoming EP album Ascension which will be released on November 8, 2024 via Eclipse Records. The album was produced and mixed by Joey Grimaldi, and mastered by Jack Kosto (Firewind, Seven Spires). The music video for “Warrior of the Night” was directed by Austin Dellamano at Weems Creative.

“Warrior of the Night is a special song to each of us because of the meaning behind the lyrics”,says bass guitarist Dave Hale“This song is dedicated to the fans who tirelessly support musicians every night, and also to the musicians around the world who endlessly pour their heart and soul into the music they create. Just like any true warrior, the musicians fight the ongoing battle to bring exposure to their music, and the fans also fight the battle by showing their support for those musicians.” Vocalist Adam Sanders adds, “The album, and this song, is steeped in Norse mythology, and as such, the lyrics also hint at that, while keeping their relevance to the fans and musicians. Each of us fights a battle in the field of music, and each of us must remain strong and give our all for those things we fight so valiantly for.” Vocalist Bettie Floyd concludes, “Our goal with this debut music video is to reach into the hearts and souls of fans worldwide and deliver to each of them the epic power and symphonic metal that we are so proud to have created. We want to show the world that Valkyrie’s Fire is not only just a new band on the scene, but a force to be admired in the music scene among our peers, fellow musicians, and fans around the world. We truly love the music we create, and we are grateful to be doing what we love!”.

Valkyrie’s Fire are a symphonic power metal band from Nashville Tennessee, and their debut album titled Ascensionis a magnificent and unique blend of soaring vocals, blazing guitar licks, and a signature low-end bass attack in the rhythm section. This band has been hailed as the symphonic metal powerhouse of the American south, and the key word here is “power!” First, the band offers us a dual power vocalist approach, male and female, often in harmony, other times in unison, switching solos and trading octaves so effortlessly that they seem to be a unified, magical being. As for the power-guitar, the verse-tracks have enough chock-n-gravel “chunk” to satisfy the heaviest of head bangers, and the lead solos are simply red hot and blistering. Last but certainly not least, the power-bass and power-drums are just as complex and upbeat as they are lush and heavy and deep, dark and daring. Ascension is not just an EP, but more a bold statement. While many of the lyrics are drawn from Norse Mythology, which is a common trait for the genre, one cannot help but admire the record’s modern relevance, the lyrics that have us “outpacing the light” and suffering the scars cut so deep they lead to confession. Our hearts break when the band takes on the idea of emptiness, reminding us of toxic relationships and those who struggle just to live through the day. We drink and smoke and lie and rationalize, fooling ourselves into thinking there will be little cost, when it is our own “tomorrows” we have stolen from ourselves, and finally, when we fall, we must “rise up once again.” Ascension will be released on November 8, 2024 by Eclipse Records.

Rainbow Skull Party new single

There’s a storm brewing in the antipodes, and it goes by the name of Rainbow Skull Party. This

three-piece psychedelic grunge outfit hailing from Australia has been steadily shaking the rafters of the indie music scene since their debut in 2023.

Comprised of the irrepressible Cuthbert brothers, Lawrie and Paul, and their partner in crime David James, Rainbow Skull Party has made a name for themselves by blending the raw energy of punk rock with the kaleidoscopic swirls of psychedelic soundscapes. Their journey began with the explosive single 'Keep It Going, Going, Going, Go!', a debut that pounded through the speakers with a furious mix of driving rhythms, fierce vocals, and a maelstrom of guitar madness that left listeners gasping for air. February 2024 saw the release of their sophomore single 'Masquerade', a track that further solidified their status as one of Australia’s most promising indie bands—a title officially bestowed upon them by Independent Music Reviews. But if Masquerade hinted at the chaos lurking beneath the surface, their forthcoming single 'ClownFace', set for release on 13th September, promises to tear the lid off the box entirely.

"The song began organically from a jam. Lawrie found a new setting on his flanger guitar pedal and it inspired the guitar riffs and sounds for the song. Coupled with the powerful beat and rhythm, the song came together very quickly. From the initial carnival-like flanging guitar sound, it was always going to have a clown element to the lyrics. We even called it “Clown” for a long time before it became “ClownFace”.
That inspiration shaped the lyrics to explore a clown related narrative. There’s lots of different references in the lyrics, and they can be interpreted in different ways. The underlying theme of the song is misconception, told through the perspective of a clown. The band’s name “Rainbow Skull Party” was meant to inspire multidimensional, perhaps even contradictory styles and approaches. For “ClownFace” there’s a fusion of distinct noise elements, juxtaposed with melodic grooves. Dave takes great inspiration from drummers Dave Grohl, John Bonham and Joey Jordison, and their influence is evident in his thumping rhythms on this track.
We love playing the song live and it always gets a good reaction from the crowd."

'ClownFace' is a sonic blitzkrieg that begins with an explosive intro, crashing into a menacing interlude and setting the tone for the chaos that follows. The verse opens with the bold line, 'I need my night fix, you’ll love my magic tricks,' leading into a powerful chorus where heavy rock, indie, and psychedelic styles collide. Rainbow Skull Party showcases their knack for fusing diverse elements into a captivating whole. 'ClownFace' is crafted for the stage, with fiery interludes and commanding performances that make it a full-blown spectacle, perfectly capturing the band's chaotic brilliance and raw energy.

As they prepare for the release of their debut EP in late 2024 and a double album in 2025, Rainbow Skull Party stands poised to explode out of the underground and onto a much larger stage. With 'ClownFace', they’ve thrown down the gauntlet—a challenge to all who dare to follow in their wake. This is a band that thrives on the edge of mayhem, where the only rule is that there are no rules, and the only certainty is that the party’s just getting started.

XIII Minutes are back

XIII Minutes Returns with Explosive New Single 'Cult Leader'

After a few years of silence, alternative hard rock/metal band XIII Minutes is back, stronger and harder-hitting than ever before. The band released their highly anticipated new single 'Cult Leader' on July 23, 2024.

The Return of XIII Minutes

XIII Minutes made a name for themselves with their 2019 album 'Obsessed,' released via Rottweiler Records. The album featured the track “Who Told You,” which topped several independent rock charts. However, life seasons changed, and the band went dark, leaving fans eagerly awaiting their return.

A New Era Begins

“I think the focus on the culture and collective goals is what sets this era apart,” reflects Jamie Kucinski, band founder and drummer. “When I started XIII Minutes, we were feeling our way around, working to understand who we were and where we wanted to go. Through every step and experience, clarity presented itself. Even during the hiatus, I began to better understand what I wanted to accomplish.”

This renewed focus led Kucinski to recruit a brand-new lineup in 2023, uniting under the common purpose of the band’s culture: a culture defined by hope, community, and fun. The new lineup includes Jerrod Cunningham on lead vocals, Thomas Wheat on guitar and backing vocals, and Preston Bell on bass and backing vocals.

“Everyone started the path with their eyes wide open and made an educated decision on whether they wanted to share in the journey or not,” Kucinski says of this new lineup.

Celebrating the Resurrection

The band's resurrection has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm from fans, who have eagerly embraced the new lineup while celebrating the return of the XIII Minutes culture they love. Jamie Kucinski explains, “The interesting thing about all of it is the amount of celebration at the resurrection — even with a new lineup. The overwhelming response has been that those who have supported XIII Minutes over the years missed the culture most of all, and they’re so glad to have that back, no matter the names taking the stage.”

New Music and Live Performances

The new lineup has already been tested and approved on stages such as Lifest, The 107.1 KOUJ Block Party, and Rock N The River Festival. Now, the band is hard at work preparing new songs for release, some of which have already debuted at these festival appearances.

“It's much more hard rock influenced,” Kucinski says of the new music. “The lyrical content will be less metaphorical, possessing much more clarity in message.”

Live hits “Fake” and “Cult Leader” are among those new, clarified musical moments. Jamie Kucinski considers these some of the most meaningful tracks of the band’s 8-year history, songs that promise to ensure that the revitalized XIII Minutes community continues to spread.

About W.A.S.P.
Few Bands in the history of Rock N’ Roll have ever incited the love, the hate, the raw emotional effect this Band has had on the world. From the very beginning, in the small venues of Los Angeles California, and later to the numerous countries worldwide that banned these Winged Assassins from performing live, the Band’s unique style of Shock and Rock caused Religious organizations, Local City Councils, Parliaments, and the Washington D.C. Senate to hold hearings in an effort to bar this group from selling records and trashing stages everywhere they played.

The band’s founding member, frontman Blackie Lawless, has led the group as its lead vocalist and primary songwriter since its beginning. His unique brand of visual, social and political comment took the group to worldwide heights and sold millions of records alongside a legacy of sold out shows across the globe for 4 decades.
