Sabbat box set

If the post-NWOBHM era threw up very little from the UK metal scene that could scare the world, then Sabbat were a shining, scarifying exception.

From Nottingham, they were brave enough to ditch the cliches, and try a little experimentation and individuality in a music style that seemed, at that point, to be predicated on the obvious.

Starting as Hydra in June 1985, with vocalist Martin Walkyier, bassist-Fraser Craske and guitarist Andy Sneap, it was the arrival of drummer Simon Negus that coincided with a name change to more rounded Sabbat.
Two demos, Magik In Theory And Practice and Fragments Of A Faith Forgotten got the young band a significant buzz (especially in Kerrang! magazine and on BBC Radio 1’s – Friday Rock Show), and a deal with Noise Records. Their debut album, 1988’s History Of A Time To Come underlined a sharp potential and by the end of that year, they’d become a permanent five-piece, with the addition of ex-Holosade guitarist Simon Jones. All of which set up what should have been the big international breakthrough, with second album Dreamweaver: Reflections Of Our Yesterdays.

The writing duo of vocalist and lyricist Martin Walkyier combined with the song-writing prowess of guitarist Andy Sneap (now a producer in his own right and guitarist in Judas Priest) were ahead of their time and created two of the most significant albums of the late 80’s. This box set contains both these seminal studio albums plus a recently found Radio 1 session that preceded them, unavailable since its original broadcast in 1987.

Completing this collection is their historic performance at the Thrashing East Live concert in East Berlin from 1990, just as the iron curtain fell. It’s presented here on DVD for the first time and also as an album of the show which is released in its entirety for the first time, including a song left off the DVD. This is all finished up with a double sided poster and book containing all of the eloquent lyrics from these songs.

2023 battles were hosted in Vancouver, BC, Edmonton, AB, Calgary, AB, Toronto, ON, Hamilton, ON, Ottawa, ON, Montreal, QC, and Quebec City, QC.

Wacken Metal Battle Canada is part of an international competition that sees bands from across the country battle each other for the chance of winning their spot among 29 other countries’ champions, and represent Canada in an international battle of the bands at the world’s largest outdoor metal festival: Wacken Open Air. The battles have been hosted at the festival for over a decade giving independent bands the opportunity to showcase their talents to an international audience along with the chance to win multiple prizes.

How it works:
Participating cities will host qualifying rounds plus a city final organized by a local city concert promoter where one band will move forward to the Canadian national final (date and city to be determined). The winner of the national final will move on to perform at the Wacken Open Air 2023 and compete against the winners of 29 other countries in a final global battle. All bands will be judged during battle rounds by respected local music industry representatives.

2023 follows AMF's most successful event to date in 2022, which saw the festival's highest attendance on record along with it marking its return after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic. The 2023 edition promises to be an eclectic earth-shaking lineup with bands from across Canada and beyond.

Since 2009 (minus pause years 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid pandemic), West Metal Entertainment and Armstrong Metalfest have not only fostered the talent of hundreds of local bands, but have imported well-known, international acts to the quiet, little Canadian town of Armstrong, British Columbia.

Each year up to 700 metalheads from Canada and the USA descend into the picturesque Okanagan Valley and under the blistering sun they spend three days camping, taking in as much metal over two days, participating in wrestling events, scavenger hunts, and catching up with their metal family.

The festival has seen such renowned headliners as Kataklysm, Cattle Decapitation, Archspire, Nekrogoblikon, Origin, Rivers of Nihil, and Beyond Creation as well as emerging artists from across North America. At the end of the revelry, the festival disappears without a trace, leaving the landscape as pristine as it has always been.

West Metal Entertainment is a non-profit society that not only puts on Armstrong Metal Festival every year in Armstrong, B.C., but gives bands opportunities to play different venues throughout the region including all-ages shows, to encourage musical passion in kids as well as adults.

Fresh Blood! This River

Check out what Stargazer Magazine said about this hot new Welsh band…

Based in Swansea, South Wales, here in the UK, this collaboration of great minds are most certainly reading off the same page when coming together to add their ingredients to this super-hot boiling pot of Rock genius. With attention to detail being second nature, the boys have almost breezed through the whole album with ease, educating us further to what can be done in this genre.
There have been a great many Welsh artists and bands who have graced our screens over the years, who have taken that all important leap of faith to make a difference in their music careers, with 90% of them still achieving today. The secret is determination, belief in yourself, and an undying passion to succeed, something that This RIVER have done wholeheartedly, with a line-up consisting of -
Idge on Drums, Dabs on Bass and Rich on Guitar.

In any musician’s career, it’s all about the journey, contacts made and the good friends you meet along the way. Success comes in many guises, riding the roller-coaster, and braving many a storm over the years before you make it.
Many artists come and go over the years due to trends changing, and this cut throat industry dictating your demise, and yet, if you stay true to yourself and ride the wave, the lessons you learn and experience you gain makes you stronger as an individual, leading you to meet many like-minded musicians along the way with similar stories to tell, and more often than not, your paths crossing for a reason.
It does surprise me that these boys haven’t been signed before, and already up there with the greats in the industry today. But, like a good fine wine, good things come to those who wait, letting things sit for a while to mature, before uncorking to the masses.
And that brings me nicely to the album in question here -
“Lower Your Expectations.”
This band of brothers have cut their teeth in the industry for a great many years, individually, and as a group, and have ingrained themselves in many hearts along the way, and I feel now is their time to shine with a debut album that’s bursting at the seams with originality, and versatility.
Perfectly enunciated throughout, Idge strikes the airwaves with a certain style and grace that leaves the listener hanging on to his every word, as he walks you through the storyboard with ease, leaving you in a more thoughtful frame of mind, before laying you to rest on a sea of tranquility and depth of thought. What’s even more incredible is the fact the vocals are performed by the drummer, not an easy task, but something Idge does to perfection.
Musically proficient, this album comes complete with all the right ingredients for the perfect listening experience, with a rich tapestry of sound, ambient textures, syncopation and dynamics from Dabs and Rich, all lovingly wrapped in this compendium of creativity.
In all, if it’s relatable lyrics that you are after that take you on a reflective journey through your mind, this is the album for you, and won’t gather dust in any collection, and will keep feet tapping and heads bouncing from sofa to stage.

At ROX Network we like what we hear too!
