Fest alert

Venture To BC's Okanagan For ARMSTRONG METALFEST 2023 Being Held July 14-15

Watch the official video recap of AMF 2019 here.
(video created by Mayne Brand Productions)

AMF Spotify Playlist 2022 Lineup here.

After their most successful event to date in 2022, which saw the festival's highest attendance on record along with marking the extreme music festival's return after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic, Armstrong MetalFest is proud to announce their 2023 edition will be held on July 14th and 15th at the Hassen Arena in Armstrong, BC.

Hosted in British Columbia's Okanagan valley with the Canadian Rockies as a specular backdrop, the 2022 gathering of metalheads witnessed Spokane, WA deathcore titans ENTERPRISE EARTH headline the festival along with Vancouver's cult-loved pyro maniacs ZIMMERS HOLE and progressive death kings NECK of THE WOODS. AMF also presented a very special performance from Kelowna's OMNIA NIHIL (formerly Apollyon) in memory of beloved vocalist Matt Depper who suddenly passed away this past January. A total of 28 bands from across Western Canada and the USA fueled the moshpit for much-needed music therapy.

Tickets for AMF 2023 and camping along with the lineup will be announced at a later date.

Festival co-organizers Jesse Valtsar adds:

"Mark it down on the calendar, we have huge plans to make 2023 the biggest event to date! With the success of 2022, we are going to continue the momentum right into next year! We are planning out our headliners and dreaming up new ways to make Metalfest the best!"

Since 2009 (minus pause years 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid pandemic), West Metal Entertainment and Armstrong Metalfest has not only fostered the talent of hundreds of local bands but brought in well-known, international acts to the quiet, little Canadian town of Armstrong, British Columbia.

Each year up to 700 metalheads from Canada and the USA descend into the picturesque Okanagan Valley and under the blistering sun they spend three days camping, taking in over 30 bands, participating in wrestling events, and scavenger hunts and catching up with their metal family.

The festival has seen such renowned headliners as Kataklysm, Cattle Decapitation, Archspire, Nekrogoblikon, and Beyond Creation as well as emerging artists from across North America. At the end of the revelry, the festival disappears without a trace, leaving the landscape as pristine as it has always been.

West Metal Entertainment is a non-profit society that not only puts on Armstrong Metal Festival every year in Armstrong, B.C., but gives bands opportunities to play different venues throughout the region including all-ages shows, to encourage musical passion in kids as well as adults.

Incoming! I Am

Texan death-thrashers I AM stream new single / video on album release day

Texas thrash-death unit I AM have unleashed their bruising new single 'The Primal Wave', the third track taken from their Eternal Steel full-length, out today via MNRK Heavy.

Watch the video to 'The Primal Wave' here: https://youtu.be/qphJMyEWUsc

Brandishing a unique fusion of ferocious thrash and death metal like a weapon of mass destruction, I AM are purely no-nonsense in their patented “Texas Death” assault. Armed with riffs, speed, and overwhelming power, the band channels discontent and anger into empowering anthems, as likely to inspire a grueling workout as to incite the pit.

Tracks like 'Iron Gate,' 'Infernal Panther,' 'Queen Incarnate,' and Eternal Steel’s title track are demonstrative of the diverse extremes on offer as menacing moods, blistering thrash, and crushing death collide all over the record. The lyrics harness the power of dark subject matter in ways that serve and inspire the listener. “The topic of ‘fear’ is addressed in [latest single] ‘The Primal Wave,’” notes vocalist Andrew Hileman, “but in a way where that fear is used to fuel you to overcome obstacles.”

Hileman further elaborates of the track, "If I could describe this song into a few words I’d use Hileman 'furious power.' It’s very unrelenting and in your face the whole time leaving an uneasy feeling. Getting with Kevyn [Reece] to make this video happen brought our vision of filth to life."

Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Randy Leboeuf (Kublai Khan, Sentinels, The Acacia Strain)Eternal Steel, the quintet’s debut for MNRK Heavy, combines the onslaught of the band’s well-received Hard 2 Kill (2018) with the primal bite of Life Through Torment (2017) into a singular statement of intent.

I AM - The Primal Wave

I AM have earned a reputation for devastation in the live environment, converting doubters and curious onlookers alike into diehard believers with sweat and determination. And across the two most recent records, they established themselves as a band who never writes the same song twice.

“You won’t mistake one track for another,” Reyes assures. “Not in a way that sounds scattered or disorganized. It’s just that we have a range within our sound. We exercise free rein creatively.”

The death n’ roll groove of Obituary, the street-smart violence of Cro-Mags, it all coalesces into something fresh, exciting, and distinctly I AM. Hearkening to the past of classic metal with a hard shove forward into the future, these guys transcend genre limitations with a sound built to last.

“The band’s music is an angry headbanger’s dream.” – Kerrang!

I AM reigns supreme.” – New Transcendence

I AM are:
Andrew Hileman – vocals
Tom Reyes – guitar
Chris Burgess – guitar
Erik Rodriguez – bass
Brandon Busa – drums

Michael Alan

Rock Instrumentalist Michael Alan Shares 'Thank You' Video Single

West Yorkshire's acclaimed guitarist Michael Alan delivers news of his video release for the melodically charged rock guitar ballad 'Thank You'. Taken from his forthcoming and unashamedly instrumental debut album 'Calling' - the track ascends from its classical guitar themed introduction into heavier melodic rock adventures. Soaring anthemic melodies and emotive hook lines, re-occurring motifs and articulately arranged song dynamics all add to the flowing sense of drama and feeling encased in Michael's latest and 'stream only' release.

Formerly releasing under the moniker of MKor Mike Kremastoules - the Leeds (UK) born and bred musician frequently draws stylistic comparisons to greats such as Gary Moore, Bill Nelson, Dave Gilmour, Joe Satriani and many more. After paying his dues as the lead guitarist in 80's NWOBHM movement outfits Ded Ringer (Neat Records) and Streetfighter, Michael continued to maintain his presence on the British rock scene whilst embarking on a career as a professional actor. Artistically inspired during the pandemic lockdown of 2020, Michael produced a collection of guitar-driven instrumentals that reflected his deep love of classic rock, blues, metal and progressive rock. A diverse range of compositions shaped to have their own individual voice and unique character. This material has since evolved into the finely crafted works that all feature on his Calling album and co-produced with Dave Johnson (Spellsound Studios -UK).

Those already familiar with Michael's work may have heard the retro hard rock fuelled 'Run' and the ballad- like single 'Butterfly'. Two well received and contrasting offerings that garnered much support from independent press/radio stations across the UK and far beyond. These singles and his new release 'Thank You' - all provide an insight into a mature performer striving to create memorable and timeless melodies. His focus has never been to try and push the boundaries of modern guitar playing techniques. Michael Alan's guitar is his 'voice' and his music aspires to express what words fail to say through sheer melody, tonality, dynamics and most of all - emotion.

The British artist (with proud Greek heritage) is now joined at live shows by fellow comrades Dave Johnson (Guitar), Lincoln J Roth (Bass) and Bob Pears (Drums). Official news announcements of his Calling debut album shall be arriving soon.

Erja new single

ERJA LYYTINEN

NEW SINGLE- "LAST GIRL"
RELEASED WEDNESDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 2022

TAKEN FROM NEW ALBUM
"WAITING FOR THE DAYLIGHT"

RELEASED FRIDAY 7 OCTOBER 2022

Finnish blues rock slide guitarist and singer songwriter Erja Lyytinen is pleased to announce the release of  Last Girl, the second single taken from her upcoming ninth studio album Waiting For The Daylight.

The single, released Wednesday September 7th, is available to stream and buy on Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and Amazon Music via https://ffm.to/ylyrxan. Watch the Last Girl music video on YouTube via https://youtu.be/r1cKU0xl8Tc.

Released by Tuohi Records on Friday October 7thErja’s new album Waiting For The Daylight features nine original songs, and is available to pre-order from https://erjalyytinen.com/waiting-for-the-daylight.

In November, Erja heads out on a co-headline UK tour with the award-winning Belfast-based blues guitarist Dom Martin.  Tickets are available from https://erjalyytinen.com/tour and www.dommart.in/tour.  Dates include Southampton, The 1865 (Nov 7),Bilston, The Robin (Nov 8), London, The Grace(Nov 9) and Grimsby, Yardbirds (Nov 10).

"Last Girl deals with the subject of bullying in schools and the feeling of being left out of a friendship group, says Erja. “This song is for those who feel as if they are outsiders, which is a current topic as the new school year is about to start. A lot is happening in the song, and it is quite intense and energetic, just like the school world is.”

“Continues Erja, “Making the music video for Last Girl felt essential because it’s such an important topic to me. A young girl features in the music video, and at the end, she is playing an electric guitar with me as part of the group and having a good time. The song speaks out on many levels.”

“It was fascinating to create guitar parts for Last Girl. It has some vibes from rock bands like Iron Maiden, but I also wrote twin-part guitar harmonies to the C - part in the style of an Allman Brothers Band. I wanted to create a song with an old classic rock feel but executed with modern sounds and techniques.”

“The intro has pull-offs and some fast licks and flute notes combined which creates the main guitar theme for the whole song. This song has probably one of the most challenging guitar parts I have written so far.”

For musicians, the last two years have been a period of reflection and soul searching. What to do with oneself in the absence of life on the road? And would live music ever be able to return to the way it was pre-pandemic? Artists and music fans alike waited for that glimmer of hope and the return of some semblance of normality. Written largely during the pandemic era Erja Lyytinen’s new studio album Waiting For The Daylight encapsulates these emotions.

With time on her hands, Lyytinen was able to pause, dig deep and fully process her feelings. Some of which she had been carrying for a long time. This journey of self-exploration proved to be a source of inspiration for the artist’s latest offering. Carrying on from the gifted guitarist's last two studio albums, Stolen Hearts, and Another World, respectively, Lyytinen continues to explore themes such as love, loss, heartbreak, and sometimes even revenge. Events transpiring around the world occasionally fed into the storyboard of Lyytinen's song writing.

The album was recorded during the first half of 2022, between Erja’s hectic touring schedule, with the bulk of the sessions taking place at The Hollywood House in Helsinki, Finland. Lyytinen was joined in the studio by long-standing bass player Tatu Back and drummer Iiro Laitinen. Having played on every one of Lyytinen’s albums since 2008, Harri Taittonen features once again on Hammond and keyboard.

Waiting For The Daylight
illustrates a new chapter in Erja’s musical and artistic trajectory. The album was proudly produced by Lyytinen herself. Subsequently, Erja simultaneously explored sounds on the periphery of the blues-rock genre. She fearlessly pushed herself and the band further than previously before.

During her formative years, Erja was schooled on the sounds of the 60s and 70s by her mother, and with her latest offering, she pays homage to rock greats such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Uriah Heap. With its heavy groove, atmospheric textures, and passionate delivery the title track is a testament to this. The song Waiting For The Daylight also features perhaps one of the artist’s most mesmerising and emotive solos to date. Lyytinen further showcases her chops during the album's hook-laden opening number and lead single, Bad Seed.

The artist pours her heart and soul into the cathartic number Last Girl. Erja describes the latter a cross between Satriani meets Iron Maiden. Says Erja, "The song talks about bullying in schools and how you can be left out of a friendship group. I always put something of my own in the songs as well, so it became a very important song on many levels.”

Just as the title dictates, at approximately seven minutes long, The End of Music concludes the release to great effect. “The song talks about missing being back on stage and the audience, as many of us musicians did during the pandemic,” explains Erja.

For Erja and her fans alike, the new studio album and her return to touring the UK is worth the wait.

ALBUM TRACK BY TRACK

BAD SEED
I wanted to make a track that you could dance to. This track has a fat groove and instantly makes you want to move. In the solos, two guitars vary. A regular guitar and a slide guitar have a conversation. It’s one of my favourites on the album and our first single release.

LAST GIRL
This song features my most developed and well-rehearsed guitar chops! Perhaps you could say it’s like Joe Satriani meets Iron Maiden. I wanted this song to be like one of those 80´s guitar hero songs, and I pushed myself to play differently. It is a very up-tempo song with a lot of intensity and funky elements. The song talks about bullying in schools and how you can be left out of a friendship group. I always put something of my own in the songs as well, so it became a very important song on many levels.

RUN AWAY
One day I was playing with my new guitar and the melodic guitar part on the song started to form. In the choruses, it turns into a rock/pop song. It was cool to write a slide solo on this one.

WAITING FOR THE DAYLIGHT
This song has a deep meaning to me, as I have lost a few friends to long term illnesses. In the song, I am describing how a lovely creature comes to you, taking you sweetly away from your earthly pains on your last day. There´s a huge guitar solo on this track which grows towards the end with a guitar harmony accompanying the lead guitar. I was trying to express the deep story through this grandioso solo and big backing vocals in the end.

NEVER REALLY HAD YOU
This is a heart-breaking blues ballad about long lost love. It starts from a small and growing track to a big number. It’s one of those songs that brings a tear to your eye.

DIAMONDS ON THE ROAD

This is one of the bluesiest songs on the album! It paints a picture of a single Mom taking care of their child, where their man has gone out to play with another woman. Mom is planning a little revenge and goes out to confront the bad weather. The song speeds up towards the end as she is determined to reach her goal following the diamonds on the road like Hans and Gretel in the forest. There is lots of crazy slide guitar on this one.

YOU TALK DIRTY
This song was originally released for the first time 20 years ago on my first recording. I thought the song had potential, so we made a new arrangement for it, and it became quite a tough number on the album. I have always liked War Pigs by Black Sabbath and this song has similar elements. In the intro through using Whammy, I vary between C and D major chords to create this moaning effect.

LOVE BITES
This is a story about love, or how the lack of it makes you feel physically uncomfortable. It gets into your skin, and it makes you feel like you never want to fall in love again, as illustrated in the first verse. This could be a Ray Charles song with a punky attitude. I also wrote violin parts for the song and the C-part has a bit of a Tori Amos vibe, with a grand piano playing expressively in the background.

THE END OF MUSIC
This song has a southern rock vibe. My band and I played this one live in the studio. It is probably the earthiest song on the album. It’s very relaxed and a perfect ender for the album. The song talks about missing being back on stage performing in front of an audience. It could also be about missing your love, how love ends and because of that, how the melody and music ends, too.

The Milk Men's new single Gabba Gabba Hey will be released on Friday September 9th. One of the most talked-about bands on the UK's live circuit, the single is taken from their much-anticipated fourth album, Spin The Bottle, released September 9th.

The new album is available on CD and vinyl from www.themilkmenmusic.com/uk-merchandise.html, and digitally from https://themilkmen.hearnow.com/spin-the-bottle-2.

Gabba Gabba Hey is the third single from Spin The Bottle, following the release of the previous two singles Cheap Seats and Go Go Baby.

"As a teenager I had started getting into punk music, predominantly The Sex Pistols and The Clash,” says Lloyd GreenThe Milk Men’s bass guitarist and writer of Gabba Gabba Hey. “I taught myself bass by playing along to Never Mind The Bollocks. I loved the energy and that at its essence it was still rock n roll. It wasn’t until several years later that I discovered the Ramones.”

Continues Lloyd, “I was watching an old clip from Old Grey Whistle Test of the Ramones performing Rock n Roll High School. I thought it was coolest thing I had ever seen or heard. The stance of Joey, the 1-2-3-4count from Dee Dee, the frantic downstrokes of Johnny - the denim, the leather jackets, the hair. I needed to find out more. I started listening to albums and watched clips and fell in love with them even more.”

“One of my favourite songs of theirs is Pinhead and at the end they always use to bring on a sign saying Gabba Gabba Hey - it was kind of their calling chant. Sadly, all the original members have now passed away and I never got a chance to see them so the next best thing was to write a song honouring them - with reference to their early CBGB days and I couldn’t resist using their calling chant of Gabba Gabba Hey as the title. Whilst the lyrics are a tribute to them, musically the song is more glam rock / early Bowie than punk, but it works, and we play it loud enough so they can all hear it up there.”
The Milk Men, who have made three previous, highly acclaimed albums recorded in the picturesque Surrey countryside at Masterlink Studio. The band enlisted the talents of blues rock production legend Wayne Proctor, who has worked with a dazzling array of well-known names from the UK’s music scene, including King King, Ben Poole, and British rock legend Ray Davies from The Kinks.

Proctor co-produced the album with Adam Norsworthy. This team was a match made in heaven, and one that has made a number of critically acclaimed albums together.

The band’s previous album, Deliverance, was released just as the COVID lockdown was enforced, so the band was unable to tour the songs as planned. Instead, they set about building their fan base with videos and single releases that saw their online following increase ten-fold. As a result, Spin The Bottle is now one of the most eagerly anticipated blues rock releases of the year.

“We wanted to really get this one right,” says Adam. We know a lot of people are keen to hear it, so for it we have used a number of great studios and production talents to help us put it together.”

The album was recorded by James Welch at Masterlink Studios in Surrey, and then the tracks were handed over to Adam and Wayne who set about creating a tight, exciting live sound that reflected the band’s incredibly dynamic and popular live shows.

“It was important it sounded like us – no frills and tricks,” adds singer Jamie Smy. “Our live shows are so well received that we wanted to capture all the things we do best on this album. We have a real momentum behind us. It’s important that we capitalise on that with Spin The Bottle.”

Jamie and Adam are best friends who met at school when they were eleven. They have been in many bands together over the years, but it wasn’t until they both developed a deep love of the blues in their late teens, the idea for a powerful, dynamic blues band playing catchy songs took shape.

Although Adam formed The Mustangs – four-time British Blues award nominees and UK music scene veterans, he and Jamie eventually formed The Milk Men and were joined by Mike Roberts, who drummed with the legendary Pirates, and Lloyd Green on bass – son of British R’n’B guitar legend Mick Green.

This mix of talents and personalities has proved irresistible to the band’s ever-growing following. Jamie’s husky blues voice is reminiscent of Rod Stewart in his prime, he prances and preens about the stage like a man born to it. Shades of Freddie Mercury, Bon Scott, Lee Brilleaux and Fish all come into his performance, but with Jamie’s extra spoonful of humour and wit, there is no one quite like him.

Mike’s powerful drumming comes from a jazz background, and he brings with it a loveable, playful personality that comes out in his stage presence. He is also fast-becoming known as the best-dressed player on the circuit – always immaculately dressed from head to toe in fine suits. An homage to Charlie Watts perhaps?

With a music legend as a father, it would be easy for Lloyd Green to shy away from the stage, but with his beautiful bass playing – eloquent, lyrical, funky, and powerful, quite the opposite is true. He is the band’s secret weapon – crafting beautiful bass lines and performing them with an imposing, impressive stage presence that perfectly balances out Adam on the other side of Jamie.

A well-known veteran of the UK blues rock scene, guitarist Adam is the perfect foil to singer Jamie. The pair’s stage dynamic is electric, with Adam firing of live-wire solos you can sing along to, whilst his smooth tenor backing vocals blend perfectly with Jamie’s husky voice to create big harmonies in even bigger choruses.

And now, on Spin The Bottle, all the band’s talents come together to create their finest album yet. That’s a big statement, especially as their second album Gold Top hailed by many as a blues rock classic, and Deliverance reached the national Top 40 and got to number #9 on the UK Blues Chart. The band are confident that Spin The Bottle will eclipse the reputations of their previous three albums.

“This is a blues rock Thriller, or Rumours,” says Lloyd. “There’s no filler on here – the quality is there from the first note to the last. We felt we could have released any number of tracks as singles. It’s great to know that people will be humming along to every track, because the album is just full of hooks.”

The band’s philosophy is to deliver quality music, on stage and off, whilst letting people know you are having fun. That infectious attitude is all over Spin The Bottle from the big beats of first single Go Go Baby, to the bouncy groove and Elvis-inspired hooks of Fabulous. The band wears their influences on their sleeve, then rolls them up and gets on with delivering an album and live show that is somehow completely unique and unforgettable. “The best band we have ever had here” or “The most fun night we’ve had in ages” are becoming familiar end-of-the-night tributes at Milk Men gigs.

Why not Spin The Bottle yourself, and put some milk in your music? The best blues rock album of 2022 is on its way! Get ready for the Milk Men’s full-phat, gold-topped music delivered in style!

ALBUM TRACK BY TRACK

DRIVING IT
Rev the engine! Pure foot-down, top-back rock’n’roll and a perfect opener to the album. The band plays at 100 mph through killer riffs and hooks.

CHEAP SEATS
An infectious rock song that grooves like a Stevie Wonder classic, one to sing while you are tapping your toe.

GO GO BABY
Full of energy and fun, Go Go Baby builds and builds to a dynamic crescendo, with hooks a-plenty along the way.

ADELAIDE

An acoustic epic that motors along on an enormous chorus, with an almost spiritual middle section. An instant classic!

HOW DO YOU THINK I FEEL?
The band’s ability to shift styles yet always sound like themselves is second to none. An insanely catchy indie rock song with an affecting lyric about losing your girl to your best mate.

SING THE BLUES
Harking back to the band’s blues beginnings, this is a sublime slice of original blues with a twist, with Adam’s clever guitar arrangements taking centre stage at the song’s climax.

GABBA GABBA HEY
A brilliant earworm of a tribute to the Ramones. Sleazy, catchy, and full of fun.

FABULOUS
Is it Elvis? Is it ZZ Top? All the band’s influences blend in yet another earworm of a track. Lloyd’s intricate, tight bass work dives the song brilliantly.

HIGHWAY WOMAN
A grinding Hendrix-like riff gives way to a trippy late-60s style rock number, featuring blistering guitar work from Adam.

BAD SEED
The album closes with a dark rock epic with shades of Pink Floyd and Queen. A huge riff drives the song over a dark lyric and epic solo.
