About The Album Artwork:

Late 19th century Victorian London.  A mix of intrigue, mystery, Old London cityscapes, conveying the investigative story of a Detective in 1898 London.

About the album as a whole (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):
This album is based on a conceptual story written by Chris Mangold and Ian Ringler. The music and lyrics are formed around the dynamics of the storyline. The main theme running through the album and lyrics is the following:  There is a very thin line that separates the thirst for knowledge and the addiction of obsession.

Story setting:

Set in the city of London during the year 1898, a new century approaches as the Victorian age draws to an end. It has been ten years since the horrific murders of Jack the Ripper gripped the city in fear. The darkness of those gruesome events still casts a grim shadow over the city and its citizens.  An up-and-coming detective is thrown into a murder mystery involving the suspicious death of his former mentor the now-retired Metropolitan Police Commissioner. The Detective has vowed to solve this case and begins to discover far more than he ever imagined. Clues and raised suspicions all lead to a twisted tale of betrayal, secret societies, and murder all seemingly linking back to the Ripper. Will the Detective uncover the long-hidden secrets of London’s sorted past or will he become a victim of his own unrelenting obsession?

Track by Track (LYRICALLY & MUSICALLY):

1. London 1898 (Instrumental)
- This song is a shorter instrumental track that is meant to place the listener into the setting of the story which is the city of London in the year 1898.

2. City Streets
- This song is the first song on the album with lyrics. This is a Prog rocker with driving guitars and catchy melodic vocals.

3. Lost Souls
- This song features heavy crunchy guitar riffs with heavy-hitting drums. The song transitions from the heavy into sober moments then back.

4. Pieces of the Past
- This is the epic of the album. This song ranges from up-tempo heavy hitting to Progressively synced parts and incredible lead vocals and vocal harmonies.

5. Society (Instrumental)
- This is the 2nd instrumental song on the album. This is a heavy heavy-hitting Prog Metal song with many guitar riffs and intricate drum and bass work, this also features an extended guitar solo from guitarist Chris Mangold.

6. Underground
- This song takes on perhaps the most unique sounds recorded for the album. The tone of the instruments and lyrics are very much reflective of the underground tunnel-like setting of the storyline. Lots of layered dark keyboard work from Chris Mangold and the chime/crunch tones from bassist Ian Ringler’s 12 String Bass work.

7. Inferno
- This is the heavy hitter's final song on the album. Lots of heavy guitar and drum work on this song along with heavy melodic vocals.

Fun Facts - Story Angles:

1. Chris Mangold initially recorded guitars to click tracks to get the vibe down for the feel and flow of the tracks for London.  This did cover a longer span of time than normal; 2019 until 2023.  We came up with 115+ minutes of music, so we are going to carve that up and do 2 releases for the London album in 2 chapters.  When we were tracking the main elements for Chapter I, Chris would share this to see what the guys thought.  If I got riffs and verses stuck in my head, I knew those were it.  All the music was inspired by the London story.  Would constantly envision the story in the feel of the songs.  Some themes were captured on acoustic initially and then transcribed over to electric guitar.  With the exception of tracks Society and Underground, most of the songs were guitar-driven.  Recording did take longer; band members were across multiple states, and George was overseas.  All music was tracked and recorded through ProTools pulling in tracks and sessions over online share drives.  Needed to pull them down.  Guitars and Keys were recorded in Missouri, Drums recorded in Montana, Bass in Colorado, and George's vocals from his studio in Europe.  Brought that all together in ProTools later to be mixed/mastered online. A true product of the digital age.

2. One special track is Underground.  If you know Metro Society, the underlying theme is based on the Metro train systems of the world, influencing story and emotion into the music.  Paris album was based in 1996 around the Metro system, while London is based in 1898 and shrouded in mystery encapsulating the origin of the London subway system post Jack the Ripper murders.  The underground track was based on a keyboard idea Ian Ringler came up with.  Chris Mangold took that idea and wove that very small idea into a dark flowing track.  It’s a song of transition, unknown, and the pathway for the Detective to venture to the next place and phase of his investigation.  It’s amazing when a small sequence of sound unfolds into various parts, connected to form a whole, layered into a complete song.  The sound of the track was inspired by some of Queensryche's darker tracks from Rage for Order and from the track Pulse by the band Wolverine.

3. Bit of a story and concept around the track Society, from the London album.  An idea that we had was to have an instrumental track on each album.  The track, Metro, was on A Journey in Paris emphasizing the sounds and darkness of the Paris metro.  For London, we came up with the idea of Society.  When you listen to them back to back, you’ll notice some riffing carried over.  Chris Mangold was inspired by the motion and sound of the Metro subway cruising down the tracks.  Gives it that driving fast-moving riffs to give the listener that feeling we were after.  We will see what the future holds, but we have done a storyboard idea for a future album based on New York and was potentially having an epic instrumental track called, Metro Society.

4. What has been amazing is the collaboration between Ian and Chris when it comes to various song structures and ideas.  Chris has a tendency to come up with endless riffs where we usually have more than needed, and Ian has an uncanny way of reducing or expanding sections to give them better flow.  We bounce off of each other, talking about song structure and how it applies to the story.  We keep things free-flowing for the most part, but because we are not 100% married to some of the parts, we can rearrange when needed.  Creating a story, sprawling concept album helps with creating songs.  The songwriter needs to have an idea in mind beyond coming up with a melody or a jam section.  The story and concept drive the making of the song and truly inspire the emotion we are shooting for.  Yes, we are truly engrained and focused on more complex progressive appealing tracks, but having enough structure that still keeps the element of a song.

5. Something we were striving for on the London album was the feel.  When someone thinks of British music, we incorporate that rock and the swagger.  That driving, flowing, and pumping feeling.  What Chris Mangold took into account when coming up with the main riffs of City Streets, Lost Souls.  England has come out with endless music gems and when you pluck out that driving feeling from Billy Idol, Porcupine Tree, The Beatles, Def Leopard, Threshold, and Rolling Stones you get a plethora of ideas to work with.  Chris Mangold, inspired by the Deadwing album by Porcupine Tree, truly inspired the track City Streets.  Listen carefully and you’ll get it.  Check out, Pieces of the Past, and there are sections in there inspired by bands The Who and Boston (okay, not British but damn good) and many other great bands.  Inspiration comes from the story, the bands we know and love, and what album you’re working to achieve.  Mold these varying styles into a genre such as progressive metal and you end up with quite the song you were hoping for.  Trust the process!

About The Band

Metro Society is a progressive rock/metal project group from the mind of guitarist/songwriter Chris Mangold. Mangold teamed up with bassist Ian Ringler to collaborate on writing the music for a new project. During the writing sessions, an idea surfaced to combine the songs with a conceptual storyline based on the Paris Metro system. After the recording of the guitars, bass, and keys, the group took on new life when other musicians were invited to record the remaining parts. Vocalist Corey Brown (Magnitude 9, Balance of Power, Section 16) was asked to perform the vocals for the entire album and delivered a world-class performance. The project turned into a family effort as both Doug Brown, Corey's nephew, and Will Mangold, Chris' father, stepped in to record the drums tracks. Final recording, production, and mixing took place at Royal Recordings Studio with the assistance.

band comments "We feel that fans who have been following the band over the years are in for a treat. The production and songwriting have taken a big step forward in overall quality and there is a dark storyline involved that we think listeners are going to want to know “What happens next?” after each song. Each member of the band has moments throughout the songs that are rooted in the Progressive Rock / Metal style and really showcase what the band is capable of on their respective instruments/talents. Guitarist Chris Mangold has some amazing lead guitar work in the songs “City Streets” and “Society” for example. Vocalist George Margaritopoulos gives an impressive vocal performance throughout the album that showcases his dynamic range of vocal styles. The rhythm section consisting of drummer Will Mangold and bassist Ian Ringler provides a thunderous and intricate backdrop that drives each song forward while not skipping out on complex technical nuances.

We are going for the full album front-to-back listening experience with this album. This is a story-based album that we are hoping listeners will dive into the full album experience. The songs are really meant to be listened to together as a whole, however, we also feel that any of the individual songs could be listened to on their own and still tell their own story. Hopefully, after listeners hear one or two songs they’ll want to jump into the full album to hear the rest." - Metro Society

LEAVES’ EYES release New Single & Music Video For "Who Wants To Live Forever"!

New Album, "Myths Of Fate", Coming This March On AFM Records!

March 22, 2024  will see symphonic metal vikings, LEAVES' EYES, release their much-awaited, new studio album "Myths Of Fate" via AFM Records. The album pre-sale is available at https://leaveseyes.bfan.link/Myths-of-Fate! In support of their upcoming record release, LEAVES' EYES have also announced an extensive touring schedule kicking off in March, find all live dates listed below!

Four years after bringing “The Last Viking” to Valhalla with their previous opus, LEAVES' EYES resurrect with "Myths Of Fate" to celebrate their 20th year of existence. As the first singles such as "Forged By Fire", "Realm Of Dark Waves" and today's premiere of "Who Wants To Live Forever" prove, with their ninth studio album, the Germany-based act consolidates their leading position in the symphonic metal universe. Powerful, epic and impressive - the band once again merges traditional metal genres by fusing elements of folk, gothic, and classical music into a captivating sonic masterpiece!

With “Myths Of Fate”, the band set sails for new winds that definitely blow from the harsh shallows of the symphonic metal genre. The fantastic world of legends from Norse and Eastern European mythology is the setting for monumental entertainment: LEAVES' EYES open up a world of magical places, spellbound weapons or supernatural creatures.

The band produced a total of five music videos with Mastersound Entertainment. Filmed on impressive locations in Iceland, Germany and Poland, they bring the myths captivatingly to the screen. Magic creatures, great battles and enchanting warrior queens come to live! Following the epic video for “Realm Of Dark Waves", a new clip for the latest LEAVES' EYES single, "Who Wants to Live Forever", is now premiering here:

LEAVES’ EYES have always played in a league of their own. The international group has toured all populated continents, playing concerts in more than 50 countries, frequently reach top positions in the album charts and with every output they deliver a multimedia masterpiece when it comes to video clips and artwork.

In their multifaceted discography, LEAVES’ EYES naturally integrate various genres such as folk metal, Viking metal or symphonic metal into their unique sound creations. Legendary releases like “Vinland Saga” (2005) or “Njord” (2009) made them pioneers in their own league, a position they successfully confirmed with chart-breakers like “King Of Kings” (2015) or “Sign Of The Dragonhead” (2018). Their compositions are complex, though, always well balanced between heaviness and melodic atmosphere. Each of their mind-broadening lyrical concepts based on mediaeval mythology are thoroughly researched, offering their audience journeys to the past times of Vikings, myths and sagas.

Their live shows are spectacular events with breathtaking stage scenery, including a Viking ship or even the “Swords In Rock” monument from Norway. LEAVES’ EYES have been setting world history to music and undeniably, by doing so, have raced to the top of the symphonic metal tree.

Now, Alexander Krull once again exceeded his own standards in the producer’s chair. For the fine and complex compositions you will find on “Myths Of Fate”, he created an extraordinary and crystal-clear sound sphere with an undeniable live feeling. The band sounds raw and feisty, but still leaves space for affective atmospheres. The US soundtrack-multi-talent Jonah Weingarten contributes the impressive orchestral score that was created hand in hand with the metal arrangements. Moreover, Lea-Sophie Fischer (Eluveitie) on the fiddle and Thomas Roth’s play of the mediaeval Nyckelharpa add on mystical sounds to “Myths Of Fate”.

LEAVES’ EYES have created an entire universe of their own imagination that showcases their talent as storytellers and music perfectionists. No doubt, the band will leave an everlasting footprint in their own genre with this album. “Myths Of Fate” provides a dynamic soundtrack for a vivid escape into a magical world of mythology!

Bex Marshall releases killer blues track!

British
blues roots rock guitarist and vocalist Bex Marshall will release “I Can’t Look You In The Eye” the second single from her upcoming album Fortuna. The single is available on all streaming platforms at https://dixiefrog.lnk.to/ICantLookYou.

Watch the music video on YouTube HERE.

The new album Fortuna will be released on CD and digital by Dixiefrog Records on Friday March 1, 2024.

Pre-order the CD HERE. Pre-save album digitally HERE.
“I Can’t Look You In The Eye is blues rock song born from not being able to comfortably stare at a person in conversation, says Bex. “Due to the fact that the energy and attraction between the of the two is so intense, almost like opposing magnets until the eyes connect. The song was co-written with Scott Coopwood from Clarksdale, Mississippi, with revered local musicians.”

Bex Marshall has a super abundance of smarts and edgy spirit to go along with her surety of purpose. She conjures a vocal melting pot of old black woman’s heartache and powerful gritty soul and unique guitar skills which have been labelled by other guitarists as “the goal.”

The long-awaited studio album Fortuna is a ten-track blues tapestry that bulges to the edges with addictive hooks and story lines. Bex is a writer of notability, she pushes the boundaries of blues and weaves the genre in and out of blues, funk, rock, and Americana.

Bex steps forward with this record as a leading female guitarist, producing her powerful, self-penned album with soaring lead lines, technical ragtime, and ballsy slide playing.

It’s been ten years since Bex Marshall’s last release. During this time, Bex has experienced a busy touring schedule, independently breaking into several international markets. Fortuna is an intense culmination of focus and personal release over the last few years.

Bex was able to stand still for a moment and draw in local London talented friends including Richie Stevens on drums (Tina Turner, Simply Red, George Clinton), Toby Baker on keyboards (BB King, Eric Clapton, Alexander O’Neil, Sinead O Connor), B.J Cole on Dobro (Elton John, Coldplay, Sting, Shania Twain, Robbie Williams), New York's Robert Eugene Daniels on bass (RIP “Red Bass”) Aurora Mannola on bass, London's gospel Queen Shola Adegoroye, and legendary Danny Bryan on percussion (Taj Mahal).

After a week-long intense recording session at Snakepit Studios in North London, Fortuna was created. It’s an album of soulful rock blues, with funky undertones with touches of gospel and roots. The album was engineered, co-produced and mastered by Nick Hunt (Dave Stewart, Boy George, Placebo, George Clinton) who Bex has worked with on her previous album House of Mercy.

“I have been influenced by multiple artists,” says Bex. “For me it never stops. Songwriters, vocalists, and guitarists – you name it!

“I grew up listening to Tina Turner. Vocally, she was my heroine. Her tone, soul, and vocal range was so versatile. Other influences include Eric Clapton’s cool guitar style, John Lee Hooker’s back porch flavour, Freddie King’s sting, Hose Feliciano’s flair, Janis Joplin’s ragtime, and Elton John and Bernie Taupin's songwriting. I was lucky as my uncle had a stunning vinyl collection, and I was able to absorb all these relevant box ticking blues rock greats.”

“She's mastered the art of making new material sound like it's been found in long forgotten vaults,” says Net Rhythms. Bex holds a songwriting retreat twice a year in Cyprus and believes that “bad songwriting is affecting the quality of our suffering.”

The album's lyrical content touches on the all too familiar addictions of life, from love to liquor, changes in society and bitter regret. The album features nine original tracks, one being an instrumental and one cover.

“The album is where I am today musically and philosophically and reflective of the performer I am now,” says Bex. “I wanted to take the hard lumps out of life, and present them back in a different light, sometimes with humor, sarcasm, or resilience but always with a shed load of tenacity. I wanted to make a record with iconic guitar sounds, heavenly funky keyboards, roots infected vocal lines with the funk in the trunk. The album is the most upbeat offering from me to date and I want to produce a show of high energy blues rock euphoria to reignite people’s mojos.”

During lockdown Bex’s good friend and bass player “Red Bass” (aka Robert Eugene Daniels) was living in London with us and after a few months sadly passed away. She was lucky enough to capture some of his bass lines in Snakepit Studios. Bex recorded demos for the album and finally used them in five of the 10 album tracks. “Red was a unique musician,” reflects Bex. “I was honoured to play music with him for over 20 years. We even shared the same birthday.”

The final track of the record is called “When It's Gone” it’s a poignant song although written several years earlier, BJ Cole (Tiny Dancer, Coldplay) plays dobro on this track as a tribute to “Red.”

Album Track By Track

PREACHING TO THE CHOIR - This is a no-nonsense guitar track and firmly sets the pace of the album. It’s a blues rock ignition to the album engine and the third single to be released March 1st. Anthemic, skyscraper guitar licks kickstart the track and launch into driving funk groove train. This song gets straight to the nitty gritty, with lofty gospel vocals from Shola Adegoroye. Bex’s drawl shoots the accusation to the guilty party… preaching to the choir. Political? Personal? Judge for yourself.

DIRTY WATER - This is the second track from the album, and it’s originally penned by Buddy and Julie Miller. It’s the only cover on the album. “I’ve been playing the song for a few years, but my interpretation is a lot grittier,” says Bex. “The original was so laid back, and a great song, but I wanted to ramp it up and make it howl with pain.” The track starts with an acapella vocal reminiscent of a back porch lament, gathering momentum into a tribal hambone, all heading towards a danceable rocker and crescendo of guitar licks and promises of abstaining once again.

I CAN'T LOOK YOU IN THE EYE - This track features powerhouse slide guitar performed by Bex. The track was co-written by Scott Coopwood (Clarksdale, Mississippi) who’s guitar playing features as the solo (playing a custom Les Paul). Other musicians featured include Barry Barnes and recorded in Clarksdale, Mississippi. This four-to-the-floor number bombards the blues crossroads with harmonious heavy blues guitars and lyrically temps fate, while coyly celebrating the human consciousness of lust.

5AM - The change of tempo is stark and the pining and longing of the electric guitar spreads that repeat through the song, hypnotizing and encapsulating the regret which continually wheels around her head. Toby Baker’s Rhodes playing behind the guitar reflects the gentle madness of her frustrating inability to make it all better and harness the mood of the song to late night. Bex’s guitar solo transformers into a dramatic longing of emotion until conceding to the hour of 5am

JUNGLE - Slide guitar comes in like a kid skidding over a shiny polished floor with a big smile on its face and sets the scene for a rockabilly inspired chicken pickin’ slide guitar solo. It’s a jungle out there! Imagine all the people you know are animals or insects, a humorous toe tapper, honky-tonk piano bar room frolics!

TABLE FOR ONE - Mid-tempo bass-led groover, with Hammond and piano dominant throughout. The tale-telling vocals depict a lonely meal. The song features funky rhythmic stabs echo a Bo Diddley feel and keep the roots firmly while the jazzy lead break encourages a sarcastic look at the stigma attached to woman who like to eat alone, culminating in lead guitar outro.

FORTUNA - Boom and we're off! The title track of the album, shooting out of the stalls in a Steve McQueen Bullet-style car chase. The resonator dominates with heavy funk driving drums from Richie Stevens and sensational bass harmonizing bass playing from RED BASS smothered in piano drama. This is the kind of energetic lunacy to let your imagination run wild.

LAY DOWN AND DIE - As you fly off the edge of the cliff of Fortuna at 100 miles an hour, the intro riff catches you and takes you on a ZZ Top reminiscent chugger, a good old-fashioned blues riffs but with quirks, slightly different Texas inspired blues rock. Lay Down and Die – “Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.”

SCRAPYARD DOG - The intro conjures up images of a slightly limp character walking slowly up to no good. The clavinet gives a vintage circus-feel to this track and Richie’s drums throw in a loose roots-reggae feel every now and again, playing late in the beat while the walking bass ploughs on, Bex plays her Ozark resonator back porch ragtime rock solo.

WHEN IT'S GONE -The “Maggie Mae” vibe of this song mixes into the sweeping chorus of BJ Cole's guest Dobro playing, banks of layered harmonies reminding us that “When its gone, it’s gone.” Bex’s acoustic ‘63 Gibson hummingbird guitar harmonizes with BJ. The sweet harmonies of strings take over this end of the album track. The song embodies reflective sentiments, educational and a warning to all.
